Most data science resumes read as a project list: model type, dataset, a metric like AUC or F1 that means little without context. The resumes that get interviews connect the model to a business outcome — what decision changed, what revenue or cost moved, what a stakeholder did differently because of the result.
What to lead with
- —The business question, stated plainly, before the technical method
- —The outcome metric that mattered to the business — not just the model's internal accuracy score
- —Scale — data volume, users affected, frequency of the pipeline running in production
- —Whether the model shipped to production at all, and for how long it's been running
"Built a model" vs. "shipped a model"
A striking share of data science work never reaches production, and reviewers know this. Being explicit about which of your projects actually shipped — versus which were exploratory or a notebook that stopped at a stakeholder demo — builds more credibility than it costs you, because it signals you understand the difference.
Statistical literacy still needs to show
Alongside outcomes, a resume that shows real statistical grounding — how you validated a result, whether you ran an A/B test or accounted for confounders, how you chose an evaluation metric appropriate to the problem — reads as someone who won't ship a model that quietly fails in production. That single sentence often does more work than another line of tool names.
